Design flaw: Windows Printers Dialog

printdlg1Sometimes I just wonder how Microsoft can come up with some UI designs… One example: the Devices and Printers dialog. Most people use this to take a look at installed printers. However, important information is just missing… like location, status and current jobs. Instead, some useless general information is displayed. Well, you at least see the printer names…

How it was before this ‘new and improved’ dialog was much more informative… It’s still there in Windows 7 and 8… just really well hidden away… Why? Only MS can tell you. To get it back create a new shortcut with this specific destination:

explorer.exe shell:::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}\0\::{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D}

After that you can choose a printer icon for your shortcut from the file c:\windows\system32\imageres.dll .
